Relief Work for People affected by the Super Cyclone – AILA

The much destructive cyclone Aila that hit the state on the 25th of May, 2009 has wreaked havoc in the
poor villages of the Sundarbans. The breakage of fragile embankments have rendered people homeless
and have thwarted their main livelihood.

The lands have been inundated with saline water and carcasses of human beings besides those of the cattle have become a common sight. The stagnant waters are threatening with dysentery and already taking people’s lives. Given the fact that the villages lack proper medical infrastructure, the situation has become more critical now.

Unfortunately the pace and attitude of the relief measures taken by the local authorities seem to undermine the distress and necessity of an emergency situation. We as a social organization decided to make our efforts to support the villagers. A collection drive launched through corporate houses, individuals and members of our organization. We received very good response from WIPRO Kolkata, Cognizant Outreach Kolkata team and few employees of IBM Bangalore
We collected relief materials, including food, water, medical supplies, clothes etc. The amount collected
has been utilized to buy medicines. We distributed relief material directly to the affected people of
Kumirmari – majher para in collaboration with the services of NGO (NEWS) operating in the Sunderbans
area for last few years. Our staff Rajjak Ali went to do this relief work from 20th June to 22nd June 2009.
We distributed medicines in the health camps organized by NEWS.
